What is the best video card for the cheapest price that i can fit in my gateway fx desktop pc?

the computer came with a nvidia 9800GT and i would prefer to stay with nvidia but im just not sure if im going to order the right card or not.|||A 9800 GT pretty much has to imply a PCI Express x16 slot, tower case and a decent power supply.

It's the power supply that's going to be the deciding factor, as nVidia cards more powerful than the GeForce 9800 GT need 2 PCIe 6-pin power connectors which means a good 500+W power supply that your existing system may or may not have. You can always upgrade the power supply, but that does add to the cost.

Starting from the 9800 GT level, I advise jumping up to the GeForce GTX 460 or 560 (or higher) series. Those will give you high video setting gaming on 1080p screens and put you back $150-200. Anything much less than this level may not be a significant improvement over your still decent 9800GT.

If you were willing to move to AMD video cards, their Radeon HD 6850 is about equivalent to the GTX 460, while needing only the single 6-pin PCIe power cable your existing system already has.

Ignore the first digit in the model numbers, because a 520 is far weaker than the 460.|||it all depends on what you want to do with your computer, be it 3D graphical design or high end gaming. That 9800GT is a decent card for some gaming. I personally use an NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 superclocked and it works excellent with all of my games.

Really it all depends on what you want to do. You can check out a site called newegg.com to get decent prices for computer hardware including graphics cards.|||There's only one video card connector (well, two, but AGP is much rarer), and that's PCI Express. Any card that your PSU can power will work and should fit into the case (if it's a really tight case your choices might be limited, but chances are if a 9800 fits a more modern card will fit). Also, "best" and "cheapest" are mutually exclusive in the realm of computer graphics hardware.|||GPU buyers guide
